Soft vs Hard Credit Checks for UK Business Credit Cards
By Afshin · · 5 min read
Every business credit card application in the UK involves a credit check — but not all checks are equal. Understanding the difference between soft and hard searches, and which lenders use which, lets you shop around without damaging your credit score.
What Is a Soft Credit Check?
A soft search lets a lender see your credit file without leaving a footprint that other lenders can see. It checks the same data — accounts, balances, recent missed payments — but doesn't appear on your file as a 'search' and has no impact on your credit score.
Soft searches are used for eligibility checking. Capital On Tap, for example, uses a soft search at the initial application stage so that being declined doesn't damage your credit file.
What Is a Hard Credit Check?
A hard search is recorded on your credit file and visible to other lenders for two years. Each hard search typically drops your credit score by 5-10 points temporarily, and multiple hard searches in a short window are treated as a red flag (a sign you're aggressively seeking credit).
Hard searches happen when you actually accept a credit offer. If you're approved for a card and decide to proceed, expect a hard search to be performed before the card is issued.
Which UK Business Card Lenders Use Soft Checks Up Front?
Lenders that perform a soft check at the eligibility stage (before any hard search):
- Capital On Tap — soft check at application, hard check only on acceptance
- American Express — soft check eligibility tool available before applying
- Barclaycard — eligibility checker available, hard search on full application
- Funding Circle FlexiPay — soft check at quote, hard check on drawdown
How to Shop Around Safely
Use each lender's eligibility checker before submitting a full application. This lets you see your likelihood of approval without any hit to your credit file.
Once you've identified your top one or two cards, submit the actual application for those only. Avoid applying to five different cards in the same week — even if all are soft-search at first, multiple hard searches if you accept multiple offers will lower your score.
How Long Do Hard Searches Stay on Your File?
Hard searches remain visible for two years on your credit file in the UK. Their impact on your score is typically heaviest in the first 3-6 months and fades over time.
Frequently asked questions
- Will applying for Capital On Tap affect my credit score?
- The initial application uses a soft search and has no impact. A hard search is only performed if you accept the credit offer, which may temporarily lower your score by 5-10 points.
- How many hard searches is too many?
- Most credit-scoring models start treating you as higher risk above 4-5 hard searches in a 12-month period. One or two per year is normal and has minimal impact.
